09:05 New twist in case of Afghan refugees trying to get to NZ
A High Court ruling that Immigration New Zealand was wrong to stop processing refugee visa applications due to Covid border restruction has given hope to a group of 70 Afghan nationals trying to get here. But there are now concerns that MFAT, which has been facilitating emergency flights out of Afghanistan, is about to shut down for summer, and may hinder arrivals into New Zealand for weeks. The ruling came after a judicial review by Community Law on behalf of more than 70 Afghans who applied for residence visas before last year's lockdown. The High Court said the rules in place at the time the visa applications were made must stand, and that applying new ones - such as Covid restrictions - fell outside the law. Kathryn speaks with Angela Smith, legal services manager at Community Law Waikato.
9:30 Brewing beer: from waste to taste
It's no secret that we have an issue with food waste in Aotearoa. 15,000 tonnes of bread, 12,000 tonnes of leftovers and 5,000 tonnes of potatoes go in the bin every year. Otago University's Food Waste Innovation project is working on ways to actively reduce food waste and repurpose things that people don't want to eat. One of their researchers is Dr Graham Eyres. He's a specialist beer scientist who's turning his eye to replacing malted barley in beer production with discarded bread. He's also a keen home brewer and for the last ten years has been working as a registered craft beer judge. He's been busy recently judging the beers for the Dunedin Craft Beer & Food Festival!
