Figures released to Nine to Noon under the Official Information Act reveal serious under-staffing in the mental health sector. There are 55 vacant positions for psychiatrists, nearly 100 unfilled nurse positions in acute mental health wards, and just under 40 unfilled jobs in crisis assessment teams. Kathryn talks to the Chair of the College of Psychiatrists, Dr Mark Lawrence, and Gina Soanes, Chair of the Nurses' Organisation mental health section.

A new report on waste has found that the levy charged for sending rubbish to landfill is too low. At $10 per tonne, the waste disposal levy is among the lowest of any country with a landfill tariff in place. The Wasted Opportunity Report shows significant environmental and economic benefits with a higher rate and wider application of the levy.
