Bearcat is the English translation of Xiong Mao - the Chinese Mandarin word for Giant Panda. It's also the name of an Auckland indie-pop band. Bearcat are Dan Trevarthen and Jocee Tuck, with various other members depending on the city they're performing in. All the songs on their debut EP called 'Xiong Mao' are about Pandas in one way or another - even the one which name-checks Scarlett Johannsson, who (according to the lyrics) isn't expecting a Panda at the table when she turns up for a blind date. Kirsten Johnstone shuffled along to a Bearcat gig, to find an enthusiastic, face painted pandemonium of pandas.
