VIDEO PREMIERE: Aria 'Unravel'

From RNZ Music, 9:59 am on 11 December 2020

RNZ Music is excited to present ARIA’s second single ‘Unravel’ and it’s provocative video, which is directed by kiwi actress Morgana O’Reilly.

Aria has been fostering her talent for singing since a young age, and has performed with artists including Homebrew, Teeks, and Noah Slee. The formally trained opera singer has recently returned from Berlin, and ‘Unravel’ is her second single.

The song’s video is directed by actress Morgana O’Reilly who’s best known for her roles in Kiwi film Housebound, Aussie soap ‘Neighbours’, a number of NZ comedy series, and many theatre productions. As a creator, her one-woman show The Height of the Eiffel Tower toured festivals such as Edinburgh and New York Fringe.

Aria and Morgana have been best friends since they were 13 years old, and together, have delivered an impressive and provocative visual for ARIA’s newest single ‘Unravel’. The video tackles a dual-lens of masculinity and femininity, showing ARIA playing archetypal men and one hyper-sexualized female. Switching from character to character, by the end of the clip, ARIA is fully unraveled.

‘Unravel’ is a personal track for Aria and was “born out of a desire for connection and trust”.  She co-produced the track with longtime friend and collaborator Abraham Kunin (The Dalai Lama, Teeks, Home Brew, Freddy Reynold, Phodiso, Rush Wepiha). Aria’s classically trained ethereal vocals are laid over a mix of strings, deep bass and a grimy snare. The final product is a unique layered song reminiscent of other alternative artists like Björk.
