What do you get when you mix soul music, prog rock, R&B, and traditional Bulgarian harmonies? Skilaa! RNZ Music is stoked to present Auckland neo-soul group Skilaa’s new single ‘Travelling’. It’s the lead single from their debut EP Fantasy Life, which is out today!
Auckland neo-soul six-piece Skilaa started writing together in 2017 after meeting through Auckland University’s Jazz programme. The success of their first single ‘Bluffin’ in 2018 lead them to become Karangahape Road favourites, performing alongside bands like Ha The Unclear.
It’s hard to put your finger on Skilaa’s sound, a modern and unique blend of genres. they’re known for their ethereal vocal arrangements, and take influence from traditional Bulgarian harmonies, West African pop and gospel.
‘Travelling’ is a Brazilian-inspired neo-soul track about feeling love for someone despite estrangement, following the journey of that loved one by means of music. The accompanying video was filmed and recorded live at Jonathan Pearce’s (The Beths) studio on Karangahape Rd.
