VIDEO PREMIERE: Sheep Dog & Wolf 'Cyclical'

From RNZ Music, 9:59 am on 14 October 2020

RNZ Music is pumped to share the long-awaited new single from Auckland indie-pop favourite Sheep Dog & Wolf. It’s his first release in more than seven years, and boy are we excited!

Auckland musician Sheep Dog & Wolf has suffered his fair share of setbacks on the road to releasing his new single, but what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, and ‘Cyclical’ marks the beginning of a new chapter.

‘Cyclical’ is the first release from multi-instrumentalist Daniel McBride, aka Sheep Dog & Wolf, since his debut full-length Egospect, which dropped in 2013 to critical acclaim. It followed his debut Ablutophobia EP which garnered praise from the likes of The Guardian and Vogue and propelled the then 17-year-old into the spotlight.

Daniel has faced multiple hardships over the last few years: chronic sinusitis, anxiety, family illness, even assault, resulting in concussion. If that wasn’t enough, right before ‘Cyclical’ was set to be released, it was put on hold due to Covid-19.

“I stopped believing I would even release this,” Daniel says “But so much has happened, and I wasn’t destroyed.”

There is always a silver lining though, and Daniel says his battles over the last decade have elevated his songwriting. ‘Cyclical’ showcases his unique ability to document a young life in disarray, against a complex backdrop of R&B, post-classical minimalism, and electronica.
