RNZ Music is delighted to present the new single and video from former Goodshirt member Gareth Thomas. ‘Wake Up’ is Gareth's second release from his upcoming 2021 album, Bits.
Known for delivering iconic Kiwi singles ‘Sophie’ and ‘Buck It Up’ as part of Goodshirt, Gareth now works solo to create experimental, colourful indie pop music.
Gareth wrote ‘Wake Up’ as a sweet wake up call for his girlfriend. The soft opening chimes are reminiscent of an alarm, and the song quickly builds up to a bouncy hook, intended to get you out of bed and spring into your day.
The accompanying video, made by Gareth and Sith Douang Kham Chanh, turns the morning battle with the alarm clock into a three-minute journey.
“We wanted it to feel like the alarm clock was singing to you. It gets more and more psychedelic as the song progresses. The grand finale is the sun coming up in the reflection of the clock face” Says Gareth.
