RNZ music is excited to be the first to share the new single and video ‘from emerging Southland born Wellington based musician Sam Cullen. ‘1000x’ is the lead single from his debut EP of the same name, which is out today.
Sam’s EP 1000x leans heavily on an 'arena-rock' sound and is made to be played loud. This is Sam’s third single after 2019’s ‘Small Town’ and ‘Shut The Door’.
Catching the music bug at a young age, Sam started playing covers in clubs and pubs across Aotearoa at age 11. Sam now writes and produces his own music. He prefers to write about candid subjects, a reflection of growing up in Invercargill where everyone knows everyone.
‘1000x’ is, at its roots, a love song, but the accompanying music video takes a different approach. Directed by Dave Thomson who ‘s worked with a number of New Zealand artists, including Alien Weaponry, Brother Sister and more, the video depicts Sam being chased through beautiful NZ scenery by what’s eventually revealed as a large angry mob.
“It was a pretty hectic and demanding shoot, (vomit was involved) and I think I’ve done more running, falling and face-planting in those two days than I have done in my whole life” Sam says.
