The Mutes (from mars) are New Zealand’s most unique rock band, made up of talented musicians with a range of social and learning disabilities. ‘Under The Sea’ is the first single from their live mini EP, due out on August 28.
‘Under The Sea’ is a fantastical rock song telling the story of a mermaid who dreams of being with someone on land, and a land dweller who’s aware of the mermaid, but isn’t convinced that living in her world is a good idea.
The Mutes (from mars) is a unique professional rock band that draws on the creativity and passion of a group of musicians, writers and performers with a range of social and learning disabilities. They’re led by mentor Sam Benge, who also produces the band’s recordings.
The group formed eight years ago in West Auckland, with the support of disability service provider A Supported Life which continues to be the engine room for the development of the band.
The band’s musical vision is not only to make and perform great music, but to bridge the gaps in people's understanding of those who’ve been marginalized in our communities.
“Being in the Mutes is like having another family and gives us a sense of belonging to something greater,” says Lisa Hannam who sings and plays guitar, bass, and keyboard in the band.
“It's such a great way to express our ideas and emotions and to just rock out and have fun!,” adds singer and keyboard player Gabriel Friedlander. “When we get together as a band and turn the volume up all the problems of daily life melt away and we are just there having fun.”
The Mutes’ live EP is their third and includes three songs each accompanied by a live video recorded at Auckland’s Backbeat Bar.
The band is set to share their new music at a free all-ages show at Auckland’s Grey Lynn RSC on Wednesday 26 August.
‘Under the Sea’ is available on Wednesday 29 July on streaming services. Mutes from Mars Live EP is out on Bigpop on Friday 28 August.
