Auckland synth-pop duo Crap Date release new single and video ‘Too Late’

Auckland new wave synth-pop duo Crap Date is Jamie Lee Smith (Princess Chelsea) and Marcel Bellvé. ‘Too Late’ is their third single and comes with an awesome vid created in lockdown.

Crap Date’s Jamie Lee Smith had always wanted to write a song called ‘Too Late’. She liked the idea of adding it to the list of thousands of other songs with the same name.

She and Marcel started writing the song before a friend’s party, eventually leaving it “too late” to attend: “It seemed like the perfect opportunity,” Jamie says.

The video came about after lockdown began. The pair had planned to release a different single in the lead-up to their album release, but since its video required social interaction, they put it on hold.

“As lockdown started and the yearning for interaction intensified we realised everyone was living the reality of this song,” Jamie says, “So we decided to share it.”

She searched for as many video clips as she could with people singing songs called ‘Too Late’ and tried to sync them up to Crap Date's song.

“That expanded to trying to make my favourite movies sing the whole song.”

The video turned out “pretty funny”, but Jamie knew she couldn't get away with blatantly using other people’s material.

The solution? “We projected the footage onto ourselves and other surfaces around the house.”

With the help of some friends and their bubbles, as well as a video synth they created their noisy collage of a music video.
