VIDEO PREMIERE: Phodiso ‘The Entry Point’

From RNZ Music, 10:00 am on 14 November 2019

RNZ Music is proud to present the new single from Auckland-based Botswanan musician Phodiso.

‘The Entry Point’ is Phodiso’s third release, after ‘The Fall’ and ‘No More’, which came out in 2018. He’s set to release a fourth track later in November.

Phodiso, a talented lyricist, worked with multi-instrumentalist and producer Carawei in her at-home, community-based studio Milky Avenue Studios in Auckland's Mt Roskill.

A rapper, singer and percussionist, Phodiso has eclectic musical tastes, often mixing multiple genres and styles in one song.

He plays percussion on standard and Southern Afrikan drums and spent two years playing in five different Afro percussion groups. He was also a member of 12-piece afrobeat/funk/punk/hip-hop group the New Telepathics.

Phodiso wrote his first “non-terrible rap” at 16 years old, and his first “ok sing-ey verse” a year later. “From then it was almost always collaborations, bands, features, etc.”

‘The Entry Point’ isn’t necessarily a love song, “It’s a song about someone I love, who also loves me. But not so much a ‘love song’,” Phodiso says.

“It sprung from a couple of conversations about how our lives have been thus far … how neither of us can save the other from their own personal sorrows … because we don’t have the know-how, but we can [still] talk, chill: “I could give you food for your soul / and we could eat while the world burns down.”

Phodiso, who’s also a filmmaker, poet, and actor, likes telling stories: “Music, dance and film all feel like different sides to the same thing for me. And like my music, it’s all steadily coming up.”

‘The Entry Point’ is the start of what Phodiso hopes will be something big. He has lots more music on the way.
