From RNZ Music, 10:00 am on 5 September 2019

RNZ Music is proud to present Lawrence Arabia’s new music video for ‘One Unique Creature’, illustrated by Auckland animator Frances Haszard.

Video made by Frances Haszard and Louis Olsen.

The video for ‘One Unique Creature’ was illustrated by Auckland animator Frances Haszard. Haszard has worked on music videos for artists including Julien Dyne (Ladi6, Avantdale Bowling Club), Wellington indie-pop trio Glass Vaults, and rapper Tom Scott’s group @Peace.

Haszard says the starting point for the 'One Unique Creature' vid was getting a feel for the song’s tone: “It’s really cinematic and suspenseful. The goal was to speak the language of cinema, mimicking classic camera techniques using animation.

“Adding to that sense of eerie tranquility and mystery informed everything: the setting, character, colour palette, everything.

“Working in this way, brick by brick, the final result was as much a surprise to us as anyone.”

Lawrence Arabia – aka James Milne – released ‘One Unique Creature’ back in April 2018 as the third single in his Singles Club project, where he released a standalone single every month for a year. All twelve tracks were released as an album in March.

According to Milne, ‘One Unique Creature’ is about a dysfunctional relationship, temporarily improved by hallucinogens (?!).
