VIDEO PREMIERE: Delaney Davidson ‘So Far Away’

From RNZ Music, 10:00 am on 15 August 2019

RNZ Music is proud to be the first to share Delaney Davidson’s new video for ‘So Far Away’ from his 2018 record Shining Day.

Lyttleton musician Delaney Davidson has been busy lately, and he's about get a whole lot busier.

After delivering a stunning performance at the Christchurch Arts Festival, Davidson was part of the Neil Young Live Rust tour, which took place in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch last week.

Now he’s off on a two-month tour of Europe and Japan, which includes more than 21 dates.

Heading into uncharted territory, Delaney is set to play Bulgaria, Northern Macedonia and Serbia before coming home through parts of Japan he’s never been to before.

Delaney’s latest video ‘So Far Away’ sees him venturing into the digital realm, thanks to director Damien Jones, an old friend who'd been experimenting with digital modelling.

The video is a hat tip to Surrealist art, featuring iconic artworks translated into moving images. It aims to show how art is brought back to life in an endless cycle, and that everyone is a product of their environment and influences.

“Art feeds art. Life feeds life,” Delaney says.

Often asked where he prefers to return to on tour Delaney says he likes new territory.

“I think one of the towns I played last tour hadn’t had a rock n roll concert for 15 years. I played on the old ruins of a fortress on the border of Serbia and Romania.

“Was quite an atmosphere at that concert, a children’s choir singing Serbian heavy metal hits, guards with machine guns walking the ramparts of the old fortress, gangs of bikers turning up. I stayed in the cabin of a proud Rakia distiller. “

Delaney says he’s “jammed in a semi-permanent transitory gear” which means he often "feels like a forerunner scout or reconnaissance man, bringing the first taste of what New Zealand has to offer to people who don’t even know where New Zealand is and opening the way for others to follow through".

“We have started to build an international reputation for our music with artists like Marlon Williams and Aldous Harding, Nadia Reid and Tiny Ruins.

“And there is always the classic thing that people think because we are a small country, we all know each other.

"Weirdly enough we often do.”
