RNZ Music is proud to be the first to share the new music video from Auckland’s Sal Valentine and his 11-piece funk/soul/rhythm and blues band. ‘Maxine’ features Sal aka, Ivan Luketina-Johnston as a cult leader, and its groovy disco vibe belies a dark subject matter.
‘Maxine’ is the second single from Sal Valentine’s upcoming album This Party Blows, following on from the release of ‘Cherry Blossom’ in May. Despite its feel-good vibes, the song's lyrical content is somewhat dark:
Hell hath no fury like the
Judge and jury that
Yours truly had to stand before
There was no fighting for me
No crying for me
I ain't lying and furthermore
I know I deserve this retribution bout to fall on me
Sal is a self-professed “idiot jazz child/indie-funk style icon” who’s been writing music since he was a kid. He’s a trained musician with a Bachelor of Music majoring in jazz percussion. Sal is a multi-instrumentalist and singer, and plays with several different bands including The Beths.
This Party Blows is self-produced by Sal and bandmate Jonathan Pearce (who also plays guitar with The Beths) and has taken over 500 hours and two years of work. It’s Sal’s second full-length album, following on from 2013’s album Sal Valentine and the Babyshakes, as well as EPs Love at No. 10 South Street (2014) and The Church EP (2017).
This Party Blows is out in October.
