Christchurch singer Sacha Vee had released an EP, which was getting some attention from a record label in Japan, when she ended up on reality TV show The Voice in Holland of all places.  Although she didn’t win the competition, the opportunity opened many doors for her there and her new album Luminous combines of her neo-soul singing-style with various European producers.

“At first I was a little bit like ‘shame, I’m going to do a pop program', but the more I got into it and the more I realised how many people watched it became so amazing. Using in-ears [headphones] for the first time, performing for millions of people. Meeting people like Michael Buble and Lenny Kravitz, all this crazy stuff was all part of it. It really gave me an open door into Europe.”

Getting up and performing is something she both thrives on and learns from and these days is versatile about how she does it. Sometimes it’s a full band, sometimes using computer-music programme Ableton, sometimes working with other DJs - the European experience has honed all of her skills.

“At first I thought that dance music was not my thing, then having been there and being immersed in it and going to these festivals that were primarily DJs and partying and then learning to love the music had a big impact.  Really getting involved with electronic music has opened up new styles of writing for me, I think it’s been so amazing for my neo-soul  style.”

Although she maintains her European connections, she’s back home for the foreseeable future and loving being back.

She played an album release show recently in Christchurch with her old band, and will play the Northern Bass Festival just before new year.
