When "scumbag" Australian punk rockers The Saints headed to London in the mid 1970s after recording their classic punk song '(I'm) Stranded' in isolation in suburban Brisbane, the so-called punks there didn’t want to know them because they didn’t have the slick pre-prescribed punk uniform – The Saints had already been there, done that, it was the punks who were behind!

Guitarist Ed Kuepper left the band after three albums and continued to release music with the post-punk group Laughing Clowns and solo under his own name. He has released his 50th-ish album and on the eve of two headline shows in New Zealand, spoke to Kiran Dass about what it was really like to play on Top of the Pops in 1977, his candid impressions of the punk explosion in London, and why he hasn't packed it all in to become a greengrocer.

Ed Kuepper's latest album Lost Cities is out now on Prince Melon records. You can catch Ed Kuepper tonight (April 16) at the Tuning Fork in Auckland, and tomorrow night (April 17) at Meow in Wellington.
