This year’s Smokefree Pacifica Beats Competition is set to get a whole lot louder with teenage Northland metal trio Alien Weaponry debuting their song “Ruana Te Whenua” at first Whangarei heat. Alien Weaponry’s oldest member is still only 15 years old, but the band’s been shoulder tapped to open for successful NZ rock bands like Shihad and Devilskin. And they’ve recently released their debut EP, The Zego Sessions.

Craig Hayes caught up with Alien Weaponry while they were touring the North Island this past school holidays to talk about starting their band, their refusal to play cover songs, and the band’s strong desire to pay tribute to their cultural heritage.
