Sharon Van Etten live in session

From RNZ Music, 4:40 pm on 14 March 2015

New York-based musician Sharon Van Etten is known for songs that delve deep into the dark crevices of heartbreak and woe. In Aotearoa for the first time, she and bandmate Heather Woods Broderick stop by the Radio NZ studios to play some songs and give us some background to these highly personal tales of failed relationships.

Following the fiery end of a controlling relationship in Tennessee - Sharon Van Etten moved to New York City to pursue music. There she fell in with Brooklyn-based indie bands TV On The Radio and The National.

She worked quietly on demos while learning about the music industry as a publicist for Ba Da Bing records, which - amongst other things - releases obscurities by The Dead C, and Hamish Kilgour.

Sharon Van Etten has now released four records, which mainly chronicle failed love affairs. She’s in the country playing shows, and stopped by Radio NZ to play some songs and talk about them with Kirsten Johnstone.

Performers: Sharon Van Etten, Heather Woods Broderick.
