Nick Bollinger reviews an American-tinged set from Celtic rock veterans The Waterboys.
The Waterboys have moved into another phase, one that is more American in its embrace of soul, country and particularly classic rock. It’s not ‘the big music’ of This Is The Sea nor the ‘raggle taggle’ folk sound of Fisherman’s Blues. Still Mike Scott’s Celtic roots remain central, and Modern Blues finds him voluble as ever, and playing with at least as much volume.
