Jimmie Sloggett on Musical Chairs

From Musical Chairs, 12:00 pm on 18 September 2010

Jimmie Sloggett was the Sax Man. On New Zealand pop records of the 1960s and 1970s, it was odds-on that any saxophone solo would be the work of Sloggett, an expatriate Australian with a stellar pedigree.

As a young saxophonist in Sydney, Sloggett played rock’n’roll and jazz, appeared on package tours with the Everly Brothers, Lloyd Price and Conway Twitty, and backed stars such as Carmen McRae and Nelson Eddy.

In the early 60s he shifted to New Zealand and quickly became a leading figure in the music scene. He was musical director on TV shows such as C’mon, produced many sessions, played in the Neophonic jazz orchestra, and in countless recording sessions. He also released singles such as ‘Yakety Sax’, ‘Runaway Sax’ and ‘Midnight Cowboy’ as well as an EP, The Sax Man.

Sloggett returned to Australia in the late 1970s with his New Zealand wife, singer Carol Davies, and continues to play on the live circuit and on sessions.

For Musical Chairs Jimmie Sloggett looks back on his busy “honking” career with Chris Bourke.
