The Kai Tahu iwi is taking deliberate steps to save and strengthen its language, and wants 1000 families to be using te reo Maori by 2025. Acknowledging the power of music to reach out to its predominately young population, the iwi has produced 'Tenei Te Ruru', a CD of modern waiata written and performed by te hunga taiohi (youth). The waiata are inspirational in content and distinctly Kai Tahu in style. A step closer to Kai Tahu language being used everyday and everywhere.
