Grammy award winning soloist and Māori musical instrument specialist Jerome Kavanagh (Ngāti Maniapoto, Ngāti Kahungunu me te rohe o Mōkai Pātea) talks to Tony Stamp about his new composition for Matariki.

Jerome Kavanagh was first introduced to the sound of Taonga Puoro by one of his aunties at the age of 16.

For this new piece, Jerome is drawing from the kīwaha, 'te hau kāinga' (the winds of home). He intended the composition to call on people to come home, to gather, reconnect and reflect with whānau and loved ones, and to enjoy the celebration of Matariki together.
