Tertiary Education Commission figures show the Otaki based Te Wananga o Raukawa, is the worst of three Maori universities for students completing their qualifications and staying in study; The head of Maori studies at the Western Institute of Technology at Taranaki or WITT, says despite competition from another Maori tertiary institution in the region, its student numbers haven't dropped; Wairoa's Deputy Mayor says she doesn't support the idea of having special Maori wards in the district for local government elections; A sacred mangeao tree used by Te Arawa people for over a century as a resting landmark when travelling, has been chopped down without their knowledge.
