Merkel and Sarkozy pledge support for banks

The French and German leaders have promised a joint plan to stabilise the euro zone but are refusing to give details until the end of the month. There are growing fears in Europe that major banks are at risk of collapse because of their exposure to government debt, particularly from Greece and Italy.
