The Better Public Media trust says online giants' turnover should be taxed and ringfenced to fund news. The Government's flipped from opposing the Fair Digital News Bargaining Bill, which started under Labour, to now supporting it - saying on balance, it's worth doing. The Bill would encourage companies such as Meta, which owns Facebook, and Google to negotiate with local media outlets to pay for their news content. After Canada introduced a similar law in 2023, Meta blocked news content from appearing on Facebook there. Meta has also said it plans to stop paying Australian media companies for news. Better Public Media's Peter Thompson spoke to Corin Dann.
