A Māori technology ethicist says the government is allowing tech companies to use Māori as guinea pigs for facial recognition technology.
A Māori Reference Group at the Ministry of Social Development says this is OK because the Identity Check technology will gradually improve.
But Dr Karaitiana Taiuru disagrees, and says members of the group should front up and justify their thinking.
