The government is establishing six new marine reserves in the south-east of the South Island - a move welcomed by Forest & Bird.
This comes a year after New Zealand signed up to the international '30x30' initiative to protect 30 percent of land and oceans by 2030.
But there's a long way to go to ensure 30 percent of Aotearoa's oceans are protected in the next six years.
