Ahmed Zaoui - a New Zealand citizen - has been detained in Algeria after a political meeting at his home.
Zaoui is an activist for democracy. He rose to national prominence here twenty years ago, when he was deemed a security threat by New Zealand intelligence services and the subject of a long legal battle.
The security concerns were eventually resolved, and Zaoui settled as a refugee in New Zealand.
His lawyer, Deborah Manning, said he is now being interrogated and investigated for his political work.
Manning spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.
