Researchers find DNA abnormaties linked to spread of bowel cancer

Otago University researchers have identified DNA abnormalities that lead to the aggressive spread of bowel cancer, Aotearoa's second highest cause of cancer deaths.

The researchers studied tumours from 20 patients, and found changes to their DNA which weren't present in primary tumours or a normal colon.

The researchers say the findings are a significant step towards the detection and prevention of tumours that spread or grow rapidly.

Associate Professor Aniruddha Chatterjee, who's a member of the research team, spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.
