Firefighters believe multiple deaths after Loafers Lodge fire
Fire fighters believe a number of people have died in a blaze that tore through a hostel in the Wellington suburb of Newtown overnight. More than 50 people were rescued, including at least five taken by ladder off the roof of the Loafers Lodge in Adelaide Road. At least five people were taken to hospital, two in a serious condition. Nick Pyatt, the FENZ district manager for Wellington, says it's not clear exactly how many people didn't make it out, but there will be multiple fatalities. He says his thoughts are with the families of those who have perished and the fire fighters who valiantly tried to save people. Mr Pyatt has described the blaze as a worst nightmare scenario and a once-in-a-decade fire for the city.
