NZ military faces increasing costs of NH90 choppers

From Morning Report, 7:34 am on 24 April 2023

New Zealand's military is facing higher costs, but has no plans to switch its beleaguered NH90 choppers.

Australia is ditching its 40 machine fleet following a forced landing in shallow waters off New South Wales on March 22.

Norway is also switching from the same version of the NH90 to machines made in the USA, whilst France and Germany change their maintenance programmes.

The future interoperability of the New Zealand Defence force with allies including Australia and other countries will be more complex and costly, but not impossible.

Phil Pennington has been looking into the reasons why other countries are moving on, and why New Zealand is so keen to stick with them.

RNZ approached the chopper manufacturers, NH Industries, for comment.
