Calls to review regulations to prevent trees toppling power lines

From Morning Report, 8:26 am on 22 February 2023

More households are seeing their lights come back on, with about 9000 properties still without power.

As the network is gradually restored, the sector says now's the time to review regulations around keeping trees clear of power lines.

The Electricity Networks Association reckons half the outages during Cyclone Gabrielle could've been avoided with better tree management.

Under the Electricity Regulations 2003 Act, lines companies can only issue a notice to cut-back vegetation if it comes within around half-a-metre to 4-metres of their infrastructure.

Electricity Networks Association's chief executive Graeme Peters spoke to Guyon Espiner.
