China travellers may be subject to extra COVID restrictions

From Morning Report, 8:19 am on 4 January 2023

The government is still considering whether it will introduce blanket Covid testing for people travelling from China.

The Australian government has introduced compulsory testing, ignoring advice from health officials which labelled the move an overreaction.

Cases are understood to be surging into the millions in China, with the country abandoning it's 'Zero Covid' restrictions.

According to a letter from Australia's chief medical officer, seen by RNZ, New Zealand health officials have agreed that tightening restrictions would be over the top.

Morning Report presenter Charlotte Cook spoke to epidemiologist Michael Baker.
