The media organisation Stuff has announced a proposal to gut its regional newsrooms, sparking fears for the impact it might have on local democracy.
In Nelson, the Nelson Mail would drop from eight journalists to three under the proposal, according to Nelson mayor Nick Smith.
When Dr Smith first became an MP in 1989, he says the paper had 23 journalists on the payroll.
