Te Pāti Māori on police photograph powers

The Police Minister is facing criticism after suggesting laws may change to allow officers to keep taking photos of people they deem suspicious. 

Chris Hipkins says the pendulum has swung too far in favour of privacy over surveillance.

His comments follow an investigation which found the police were routinely illegally taking photographs and storing thousands of images which should be destroyed. 

Māori made up more than half the available data from intelligence photographs retained by police - we put that to the Police Association President's Chris Cahill.
