Christchurch council members consider their votes on housing density rules

From Morning Report, 8:50 am on 8 September 2022

Tensions are running high in Christchurch as the city council prepares to vote on controversial new national housing density rules.

Locals say the government is trying to force a one-size-fits-all-approach on the housing crisis and the new rules won't solve the problem of housing affordability in Ōtautahi.

But the vote could be pointless, with the government threatening to send in a commissioner to approve the change if the council doesn't.
