Academic suggests dropping alcohol limit for drivers

From Morning Report, 6:45 am on 31 August 2022

Alcohol plays a part in roughly 30 percent of road deaths - meaning more than 100 people die in their car each year with alcohol in their system.

In a blog post considering ways to reduce the strain on the health system, Otago University Professor Nick Wilson suggests lowering the blood alcohol limit behind the wheel from 50 to 30 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.

He's also proposing a tax of 15 cents per standard drink.

He spoke to Mani Dunlop.
