The American basketball star, Brittney Griner, has been sentenced to nine years in prison after Russian airport officials found traces of drugs in in her luggage.
Griner's detention and subsequent trial has been politicially fraught, with the Biden administration recently offering a prisoner swap with Russia after months of pressure from the American public.
Russia rejected the deal. Prosecutors had lobbied the court for a 9.5 year sentence.
US President Joe Biden says the nine year sentence is unaccepable and has called for Griner's immediate release. Before the sentence was handed down, Griner had one last chance to address the court.
She told them she never intended to break any law. Griner's attorney has 10 days to lodge and appeal.
