Former Nelson MP Dr Nick Smith has announced he'll be throwing his hat in the ring for the region's mayoralty.
The veteran politician retired from Parliament last June, after an inquiry was launched into a verbal altercation in his Wellington office.
With the mayoralty in his home town up for grabs, he's putting himself forward for a role in local government.
