Health officials have given short shrift to an unprecedented proposal to boost the numbers of specialised nurses who provide critical support to GPs.
RNZ can reveal all the schools of nursing have joined forces on a proposal submitted in May aiming to double the number of nurse practitioners being trained.
But despite the workforce crisis they've been told the status quo will continue - a response they're calling a huge disappointment.
