Wellingtonians are finally seeing some progress on a plan to get the capital moving.

The government's given the go-ahead for plans to build light rail across town, an extra tunnel through Mt Victoria, and roads rearranged around the Basin Reserve.

A business case on the transport overhaul - costing to the tune of $7.4 billion - is expected by 2024, with construction to begin four years after that.

Corin Dann was joined by the Greater Wellington Regional Council chair Daran Ponter and Save the Basin spokesperson Tim Jones.
