Police say it appears a van involved in an horrific crash south of Picton may have crossed the centreline when it collided with a truck.
Seven occupants of the van - one of them a one-year-old baby - were killed and another two people were seriously injured.
The crash scene has been described as "absolute carnage" and a terrible sight.
Capital and Coast DHB say one patient is in ICU in a serious condition.
The other is in ED in a stable condition.
Local woman Georgie McLean who lives about a minute drive from the scene says there have been several crashes on State Highway 1 from Picton to Blenheim in the six years she's lived there.

He was among those who attended the crash yesterday and spoke to RNZ reporter Rosie Gordon last night.
