Teachers are taking sick leave at nearly double the normal rate, stretching budgets for some schools.
Principal of Tirimoana School in West Auckland Peter Kaiser says it is not only teachers who are sick.
Other support and administrative staff are also taking more leave but the budget for relief teachers does not cover these people.
Kaiser spoke to Susie Ferguson.
