One person died on the roads over the long weekend, following a crash on the Waikato Expressway on Saturday morning.
The toll is lower than in previous years, with three deaths over Queens Birthday in 2021 and six in 2020.
There was a second death in Canterbury, but the car was 'off road' so is not included in the official toll.
National Road Policing Centre director Steve Greally spoke to Susie Ferguson.
