A fur seal with a barb in its neck parked up on Wellington's Oriental Parade has sparked concern among Wellingtonians.
In an effort to protect it, an animal welfare group - HUHA - has put cones around the seal, which is lying on the off-leash dog beach next to Freyberg swimming pool.
HUHA's Jono Lambregts Lambbricks has been guarding the seal overnight, and said it's not in tip-top shape.
He said someone from the Department of Conservation arrived recently to decide on the next steps.
Department of Conservation marine science advisor Laura Boren spoke to Susie Ferguson.
