Immigration New Zealand is ending its practice of imprisoning asylum seekers, after an independent review labelled the practice "inhumane" and "contrary to New Zealand values".

Between 2015 and 2020 about 100 asylum seekers were imprisoned, including one who spent three years behind bars while their claim was processed.
