Union keen to keep Labour Day

From Morning Report, 7:46 am on 21 April 2022

The union movement says National's suggestion that Labour Day is scrapped as a public holiday, shows the party is out of touch with working people.

Leader Christopher Luxon told us on Wednesday morning the day off should be cancelled to make up for the cost of the new Matariki holiday in June.

"What we've been saying since this bill has come to power has come to Parliament is look, we're very supportive of Matariki, why don't we cancel Labour Day?"

He said the cost of the new day-off is $450 million and that needs to be recovered, but later in the day he rolled back his comments and told media if he won the election no holidays would be cancelled.

"Once this thing's passed, it ain't changing. I'm sorry I won't be able to follow through on the commitment of removing it, because once it's done it's going to be set in place,"

CTU secretary Melissa Ansell-Bridges spoke to Māni Dunlop.
