The National Party now faces a by-election after the shock resignation of finance spokesperson and former leader Simon Bridges.
His departure is a blow to a party finally overtaking Labour in the latest poll. Bridges says there's no secret reason for his resignation, he simply wants to take up new opportunities and spend more time with his young family.
Bridges is one of the most experienced members of caucus, but leader Christopher Luxon is batting off concerns for the party.
