Afghans still stranded despite High Court win - lawyers

From Morning Report, 8:27 am on 3 February 2022

Community lawyers say the government is effectively blocking scores of Afghans from escaping the Taliban in their country.

They say there has been slow processing of some visas, and worse still, no help from the government's Afghan taskforce.

The High Court in November faulted Immigration New Zealand for pausing visa applications due to Covid-19, and for refusing exemptions on compassionate grounds.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade says visas issued as a result of November's court review don't fit within the scope of the taskforce.

Immigration New Zealand says it's separately assessing whether the applicants could be granted a critical purpose visitor visa in response to the High Court ruling.
