Waikanae bird watchers are delighted after a rare sighting over the weekend.
On Friday last week local photographer Elizabeth Taylor spotted an unusual bird and snapped a picture before posting it on a Facebook page to find out what it was.
From there the frenzy started, and it's been identified as a rare Black Tern - a possible first sighting of the bird in New Zealand.
Taylor spoke to Morning Report.
